Sunshine Coast is a peri-urban region located in South East Queensland, Australia. It is the district defined in 1967 as "the region that is part of the Shires of Landsborough, Maroochy, and Noosa, but excluding Bribie Island". It lies 100km (62 miles) north of Brisbane, South East Queensland. The Coral Sea coastline borders it. The urban area encompasses approximately 60 km (37 miles) of coastline and hinterland and hinterland, stretching from Pelican Waters up to Tewantin.
The first settlers in the area were Papuasians who came from northern Australia. The region was settled by Europeans in the 19th century. The area's development was gradual until tourism became an industry of major importance. There are numerous coastal hubs in the area, including Caloundra and Kawana Waters, Maroochydore and Noosa Heads. Nambour and Maleny are now the primary commercial hubs for the hinterlands.
The Sunshine Coast District has been divided into two local governments The Sunshine Coast Region and the Sunshine Coast Region (or Shire of Noosa) which manage the northern and southern portions of the Sunshine Coast.
As of June 2018, with an estimated urban population of 333,436, Sunshine Coast is the third most populated region in Queensland and 9th most populous in the entire country. Over the past five years, the population has increased gradually at a rate of 2.4 per year.
